Well, here we are, the first cosy café. It's not a bad place to start, although also not exactly what I had in mind... comfy sofas and crackling firesides it ain't. But it's still a good coffee retreat. |
Café Pop is downstairs from the Pop Boutique, a colourful niche shop stocked with 1960s clothes and memorabilia. It's more or less independent (it's part of a very small chain). The café is an extension of the shop and a step back in time. It feels youthful and laid-back, and the clientelle all seem to be drama students (I'm guessing).
There is a small secluded section, and the drinks are served in mis-matching mugs; both are good signs. Plus there's an appetising vegetarian menu, although the kitchen was being refurbished at the time so I couldn't try the food.

On the downside, when I visited the service was very down-to-earth (that's being kind), and the coffee wasn't great. Maybe it was because the place was in a bit of a transition, furbishment-wise. Oh, and the chairs weren't particularly comfy either.

So I suppose this isn't everyone's cup of tea. But I'd still recommend it as a good place to sip coffee in rainy Manchester, especially if you're feeling a little bohemian.
